Anxiety Phobias - Phobia cures are like magic!!
The startle effect happens to us all, however often we don't realize where a phobia got started and so we think its something to do with just us! ,These debilitating feelings and behaviours interrupt our ability to live a full life and can be easily and comfortably dealt with in just 3-4 sessions!
Imagine that new job promotion, only you have to fly! A dream job for some; however, someone with a phobia for flying would decline the opportunity without even trying!
Imagine having that feeling of terror so completely gone, you book your first flight school lesson, which includes a take off and landing! One of our clients did just this!
The most amazing part was, she didn't have to, but she wanted to. She said, "as soon as I touched down for the first time, I knew I was free! And more than that, I knew I could do anything I wanted to. In that moment I was free of fear, forever." Now clients don't usually go to this extreme, however, it's an option!
Usually in 3-4 one hour sessions clients make the permanent changes they seek. The logic behind this apparently magical transformation is simple, once you know you can't un-know it, and once you know, you just keep doing what you know....
A little about Phobias
We learn to be afraid of lots of different things, a startling variety of objects and situations. Lots of it we learn in our homes, as we grow up, be afraid of.... And often these "fears" are un-necessary fears instilled by well meaning parents and teachers, who simply wanted to ensure we lived another day!
As a matter of fact, most of us have a few fears, but if it is something you can avoid then you don’t feel the fear. If you can avoid all black dogs then that intense fear doesn't get activated in you. So we move into that inner avoidance. Advoid the pain, and then it appears...we gain. Truly though, it's better to just be without the fear.
Why it works
It usually takes just one bad experience for someone to generalize a single, frightening event into knowledge that all similar events require the same response. In an instant of time we have learned how to behave for the rest of our life. From there, every similar event reinforces this over and over again, until the very thought of the event can bring on the panic and fear. This learning is, of course, unconscious learning. And the unconscious just wants to protect us from the FEELING. So it reminds us - don't get on that aeroplane, don't be around black dogs.
Our brains learn fast when it's unconscious ; one event is enough for us to learn new behaviours and always evoke them in appropriate circumstances. The good thing about this is that we can use this very same learning skill to ‘unlearn’ the phobic behaviour pattern. We can use speed to defeat the old, unwanted responses. That is the basis of this Magic!
NLP the study of the Neuro systems of the Brain and how we can repattern it using language.
NLP studied people who had recovered from a phobia using only their own resources. These experts at modeling asked how they did it. NLP communication models then resulted in the intervention to help people recover permanently from a phobia.
Research continues, and newer methods utilizing neuro-hypnotic re-patterning which involves the idea of neutralizing the phobic effect by reversing the flow of phobic feeling. Techniques that are rapid and permanent are still being searched for. Not every technique works with everybody,so we use these and Hypnosis.
NLP and Hypnotherapy
NLP enables you to make changes to automatic, unconscious thought processes in a highly conscious way. Hypnotic methods rely on direct communication with the unconscious, where we make use of direct and indirect communication. Metaphor, story and other thought processes also come into play. It's really a very enjoyable experience and all the while you are clearing a very unwanted resource state, that simply no longer serves you!
It is the way we bring them together and combine them as NLP/Hypnotherapy that creates such a powerful therapeutic process.
Other techniques
Until these newer methods came along there were few techniques available, and they were not always reliable or rapid. Desensitization was one of the techniques. This has two main variants, partial and flooding.
Flooding involves being confronted with the object of terror, and being literally forced to develop a different way to react. The other method involves you confronting your fear, but starting with a small, limited exposure and building up over time. Both methods are extremely uncomfortable and uncertain in effect. Some actually believe these methods, while extremely uncomfortable for the person, may actually anchor the phobia further or even create new ones.
Talk Therapy has been a process many have used over the early years when we didn't fully understand the brain patterning and functionality. Now as we do come into better understanding we're starting to understand how we can re-anchor old fears, and sometimes add new ones, simply by talking about it, over and over again!
Hypnosis is another available approach, using deep relaxation and installing calm responses, and traveling back in time to arrange for a different response to the original experience. All these hypnotic methods are still in use today, and are accepted as useful therapeutic tools. In fact, hypnotherapy has been the most effective approach for many years.
